Fernando Torres: Claims of Liverpool’s Lies Won’t Win Fans Back

Tags: , , , , , , ,

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres‘ claims that Liverpool lied to him won’t win back any fans for the Spanish star after his departure from Anfield is still an issue many Reds fans haven’t forgotten.

Torres said the following about his Anfield exit, via Soccernet:

“They made promises that they didn’t keep and I left because I realised I didn’t have time to be part of a project that would take years. I have nothing against the Liverpool fans. I didn’t want to leave Liverpool the way I did but the club lied. I was let down and I don’t understand why the fans hate me.”

I can understand that Torres was probably upset at where Liverpool was during the time of his departure. His last few months at the club were difficult for everyone involved, and there certainly was some frustration.

However, you cannot come out and say that the club lied to you and failed to keep promises when fans already are quite unhappy with your exit from Merseyside. Then go as far to even say that he cannot understand why the fans hate him.

This was a foolish move by Torres that will only cause the fans to be even more angry at their former hero.

Since his departure from Liverpool, Torres’ brief tenure at Stamford Bridge has been an absolute disaster, likely to the delight of many Reds fans.

Torres’ only start since November was a Carling Cup match against Liverpool, and he has rarely been used, even as a substitute on manager Andre Villas-Boas’ bench.

What Torres needs to do is shut up and stop being concerned about what the Liverpool fans think of him.

Part of the reason he is struggling so much at Chelsea is because he is constantly distracted by his transfer from Liverpool, the expectations of him at Chelsea and living up to the £50 million transfer fee the Blues paid to Liverpool to get him in January.

Torres is just adding fuel to that fire with these comments, when what he should be focusing on is becoming a regular fixture in the starting XI.

“I am going to try to be very humble and get back into the Chelsea starting line-up,” he added. “My form has not been good but I am world and European champion and I deserve more respect.

“It’s hard being on the bench but I respect the players who are playing. I’m going to support the team and get back in.

“It’s true that [Spain head coach] Vicente del Bosque is worried about me and my form for Chelsea. It’s up to me to go back to being the striker I was before. If I go back to how I was a few years ago, I will again play an important role in the Spanish national team.”

Again, Torres cannot be thinking about matters outside of Chelsea. He must forget about the Spanish national team for now and focus on making the Blues a squad that can win the Champions League.

Spain’s roster is set up pretty well for the European Championships next summer, and all Torres has to do is play to his expected level of performance at Stamford Bridge, and his place on Del Bosque’s roster will take care of itself.

Torres must stop saying things about his Liverpool exit in the public. He needs to focus on winning matches for Chelsea and returning to his old goal scoring form.

He doesn’t need anymore distractions at this point in his career.
